Personal VS. Professional Social Media Use

  •  Social media has many uses, whether you use it professionally, or personally, or both. Using social media personally is a means of communicating with friends and family. sharing your life in a series of text, videos and pictures. In today’s world though, it is important to be selective
  •  about what you post even on an unrelated to your business personal account because hiring managers are looking at this type of stuff when hiring. Using social media personally is very different than using it professionally. It is important to make sure you know your companies social media policies when getting hired somewhere so that it does not cost you in the end.  Using social media professionally can be a way to recruit for your business whether you are looking for employees, or looking for clients. This type of social media use can look similar in that you are still using photos, text, and images to connect, but the content is geared specifically to your audience. If you are a photographer, you are marketing to those who need photos, and you can even break that down further to a specific genre such as weddings. Professionals may share original or custom content like articles about the industry, things that make the customers want to buy, for instance if you are a financial  advisor you might use content talking about safeguarding your future and include information about the insurance and investment products that you offer. There are also specific networks such as Linkedin that are specific to professionals for networking and the sharing of professional content. Most social media sites also have different features for business pages than they do regular user pages making it easier to differentiate. Facebook, Linkedin and Pinterest all have specific business accounts that can be used to do business on, the platforms look the same, they just offer different advertising opportunities, and features to the businesses. Twitter is another big one used by professionals, even medical professionals are using it because of the quick dissimination of information. According to Markham, Gentile, and Graham,"the journals of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)—the Journal of Clinical Oncology (@JCO_ASCO), Journal of Oncology Practice (@JOP_ASCO), and Journal of Global Oncology (@JGO_ASCO)—are all represented on Twitter." Knowing how and when to use social media in what way can really help you navigate social media relationships.
